Children’s Book Workshop — whole day
About this workshop
Ever meant to write and illustrate your own children's book? This is the day you actually do it — a full, unhurried day for adults to take a picture-book idea from a blank page towards a real, finished little book: story, characters and all. No experience needed; every character starts with a single line.
We build personality through gesture and expression — a favourite subject of mine for the depth it offers, both in the drawing and in the story. We draw on the principles of well-loved children's authors and illustrators, browse a carefully curated library of picture books, and unlock our creativity by playing with unexpected materials. We draw from imagination, capture the essence of a story, and build the visuals around a well-crafted narrative — rhyme, alliteration, playful repetition, or even wordless. Let the illustrations tell the story.
What we'll do
- Develop your characters and find their voices
- Shape a plot and storyboard it
- Explore writing techniques and styles
- Start a book dummy for words and pictures
- Try illustration techniques and unusual materials
- Develop your own style for page spreads
By the end you'll have carried a picture-book idea a long way towards a finished little book — with plenty to continue at home. A relaxed small group, all materials provided, suitable for complete beginners through to experienced makers. Whether it's a story for a child in your life, a long-held idea, or simply a creative day for yourself — this is your blank page.
