A likeness doesn’t live in the details — it lives in the relationships. The distance between the eyes, the tilt of the head, the angle from the corner of the eye to the corner of the mouth. Get those proportions honest and the face is already them before you’ve rendered a single eyelash.
I always build the eyes first, because everything else calibrates to them — and a face is never symmetrical, so I chase those small asymmetries rather than tidy them away. They’re where the character hides. And it really is a conversation: even from a reference photo, you’re constantly asking the face questions and letting it answer. We dig into all of this in Creative Portraiture.
