Children’s Book Workshop — whole day
About this workshop
A full day of children’s book illustration and story-making for young illustrators (ages 7+). Every character starts with a single line. We build personality through gesture and expression — a favourite topic of mine for the depth and variety it offers, both illustratively and in narrative.
Across the day we apply the principles of well-known children’s authors and illustrators, look at good practice from our carefully curated CCB library of children’s books, and unlock our creative skills through play with unexpected materials. We draw from our imaginations, capture the essence of a story, and build the visuals around a well-crafted narrative — whether with rhyme, alliteration, playful repetition, or even wordless. Let the illustrations tell the story.
What we will do
- Develop characters and find their voices
- Shape a plot structure and storyboard it
- Look at writing techniques and styles
- Start a book dummy for words and pictures
- Explore illustrative techniques and unusual materials
- Develop your own style and approach for page spreads
Together we will take a picture-book idea from a blank page towards a real, finished little book — story, characters and all — with plenty to carry on at home afterwards.
