Paint In The Style Of… (PITSO)
About this workshop
Paint In The Style Of: each session, we borrow a great painter's eyes for the day. Pick your artist, pick your date from the list below, and come and paint the way they did — until some of it sticks to the way you do.
What you'll make
A finished painting in the style of that session's artist, completed on the day. Each session works the same way: we look at what actually makes the artist tick — their colour, their marks, how their compositions and light work — then you paint your own piece in their language, with guidance the whole way. Copying the masters is the oldest art education there is, and it still works: every session leaves a technique, a palette or a dose of nerve in your own painting that wasn't there before. Come for one artist or collect the set.
The artists
David Hockney — bright, flat pool-and-splash acrylics: clean edges, bold colour, and water you can almost hear. Glyn Macey — bold, energetic acrylic seascapes and harbours, straight from the Cornish coast we can see from the door. Easton — confident, expressive acrylic landscapes, where a few brave strokes do the work of a hundred timid ones. Monet — impressionism at the source: light, atmosphere and broken colour, painted before the moment changes. Forsey — mixed media with real texture, building a painting in layers you can feel as well as see. Sidaway — clean, controlled watercolour and sun-baked Mediterranean scenes, all light and shadow. Scheinburger — loose, expressive ink and wash, the travel-journal sketch elevated to an art of its own. Kenton — dramatic acrylic urban landscapes by night and day: wet streets, glowing windows, city atmosphere.
Everything's supplied
All materials and tools are provided for every session — acrylics, watercolour, ink or mixed media, whatever that artist demands — and refreshments are included. All levels are welcome at every session; the artist's style gives you a map, which makes these some of the friendliest workshops for beginners. Groups are kept small. Just pick a date. I'll bring everything else, including the biscuits.
Your tutor
I'm Damian Sémonin — working artist and educator, with over a thousand students taught at the Cornish Craft Barn. I built this series because every painter I admire taught me something I now use daily, and passing those borrowed tricks on is half the fun of the job. Come and pinch a few for yourself.
